Rocky Mountain Penstemon

(Penstemon strictus)

Rocky Mountain Penstemon is a perennial native to the Rocky Mountain region of the western United States. It grows to a height of 30.5 to 76 cm (12 to 30 in.) with a basal resette of dark green leaves. The royal blue to purple snapdragon-like flowers grow on one side of an upright stem. The bloom period is May through July. It is drought-resistant and is useful for soil stabilization. Rocky Mountain Penstemon has also been used in mixtures for big game range restoration.

Rocky Mountain Penstemon thrives in rocky and sand-loam soils at elevations of 1,829 to 3,353 m (6,000 to 11,000 ft.). Seed may be drilled 0.6 cm (¼ in.) deep or broadcast and covered. Planting dates should be just prior to the moist growing season, usually spring to early summer.
