Yellow prairie coneflower and Mexican hat are both common names for different color forms of the same plant. Prairie coneflower is a perennial, native to the Great Plains and adjacent areas. It grows to a height of 30.5 to 91 cm (12 to 36 in.). The leaves are finely divided and borne at mid-stem. The ray flowers droop at the base of an upright cone. Flower color ranges from yellow to maroon with variations in between. Mexican hat is the name for the maroon and yellow form. The bloom period is June through August.
Yellow Prairie Coneflower is widely distributed in prairies and open woodlands on a variety of soils from well-drained loams to rocky, gravelly-sandy soil. It needs full sun for best growth. Drill or broadcast seed 0.6 to 1.3 cm (¼ to ½ in.) deep. It is best planted before the moistest growing season, usually in the spring. Reduce seeding rate by three-quarters for use in mixes. Uses include roadside plantings, landscaping and re-establishing prairies.
